January 4th A great start to the year with a new addition to the list in the shape of a Cetti's Warbler in the bushes by the Newstead Road Outdoor Education Centre. I had actually heard it a few weeks ago but didn't believe my ears! It's probably a young bird wandered over from Radipole. 3 Black-necked Grebes off Sandsfoot were the first I'd seen for ages. January 13th In lovely calm conditions it was easy to spot birds out in the harbour, so the Slavonian Grebe that was just off the beach in Albert's Bay was exceptionally clear. The 2 Great Northern Divers and 3 Black-necked Grebes were much further out but the first Black-throated Diver I've seen in ages was flying just over my head at Small Mouth. The first singing Greenfinch of the year was at Wyke Road. January 18th Not much different today apart from 3 Mallards and a Oystercatcher at Downclose and a Green Woodpecker calling at Rodwell. January 27th A record grebe total today with 3 Slavonians and no less than 6 Black-necked off Sandsfoot. The Red-breasted Mergansers reached a peak with at least 120, mostly around Small Mouth, where there was also a Black Redstart. |
