December 31st - The year closed with a Cetti's warbler singing at the northern end of the trail. November 14th - A yellow-browed warbler was calling near the Wyke Road tunnel - my first for the trail. In the Rodwell Cutting two grey wagtails have arrived for the winter and a couple of coal tits were heard. At Sandsfoot the first (8) black-necked grebes were in the Harbour and the great crested grebes had increased to 15. November 12th - Four goosanders were feeding amongst the rocks off Sandsfoot this morning and the Cetti's warbler was singing again at the north end of the trail. A peregrine was hunting around Westwey Road and at the Stone Pier two purple sandpipers were feeding with a flock of turnstones. November 11th - The first great crested grebe and mergansers were off Sandsfoot this afternoon. Yesterday a Cetti's warbler was singing at the north end of the trail near Ilchester Road. October 2nd - The stock dove was still there! Also a stonechat at Downclose Cutting and a skylark flying over there. The first siskins of the autumn were also heard passing overhead. August 4th - A stock dove was singing near Wyke Road tunnel - in the same tree that one was in 11 months ago! June 11th - A walk along the northern half of the trail confirmed that all the usual woodland birds were present this summer with good numbers of robin, wren, blackbird, chaffinch, chiffchaff and blackap. May 2nd - The three great northern divers were still off Downclose this morning, unusually sat very close together. Nearby were five common sandpipers on the shore and a whimbrel flying west towards Ferrybridge. At Smallmouth were two little terns and several sandwich terns. Away from the Harbour there were blackcaps, chiffchaffs, a sedge warbler and both lesser and common whitethroats in song. April 25th - Presumably the same common scoter was seen this morning, along with three very late great northern divers. The first sandwich terns and swallows were in the harbour and a whimbrel was heard but not seen near Sandsfoot Castle. March 20th - A drake common scoter was in the middle of the harbour off Downclose today. March 15th - The trail's first ever red kite flew north over Newstead Road at 0930 this morning. March 3rd - A female stonechat was a rare sight at Downclose this afternoon. Offshore at the same spot were 3 black-necked grebes and a great northern diver. A slavonian grebe was off Bincleaves, as it has been for several weeks. February 23rd - A record number of 41 oystercatchers off Smallmouth today. Also a flock of 20 or so brents there. February 19th - One great northern diver and a black-throated diver today. January 17th - Three great northern divers and four black-necked grebes. January 6th - A Dartford warbler calling at Downclose Cutting got 2016 off to a good start. Nearby out in the harbour was a fairly close great northern diver but the only grebes seen were a couple of great-crested. more on my video blog ... |
