There have been lots of dragonflies buzzing around the reserve recently and last week I found this lovely little chap on the railings just before you get to the North Hide.
It was a freshly emerged male common darter.
By the next day it had turned brilliant red but for some reason it wasn't so approachable.
As I watched this one it dashed off and returned with something in its mouth.
Having finished that it spent a few minutes "licking its lips".
I then tested how tame it really was by offering it my finger to perch on, which it readily did.
This often works with butterflies but I've never had a dragonfly do it before.
This one not only sat on my finger for a few seconds but when it flew off it came straight back and landed on my hand!
Of course I couldn't film that though, as I had a dragonfly on my camera-operating hand.
