Hiding in a small Holm Oak tree next to Wyke Regis Cemetery was this tiny insect-like bristletail.
I was surprised to see one up a tree as all the other ones I've seen have been under rocks. I often see them at Tumbledown Farm when I am working on the drystone wall there.
Only a few millimeters long, these very primitive arthropods are really worth taking a close look at.
A bit like insects, but more like crustaceans such as woodlice. They have very similar feeding behaviours to woodlice, eating decaying plant material. This one seemed to be eating something on the surface of the leaf, yeast or other fungi perhaps.
