Multiple hurricanes the other side of the Atlantic mean that migrating waders are forced further away from the North American coast than usual - and some of them end up in the UK. This afternoon there were three American waders in the area; two in Weymouth and one on Portland. I went for the two in Weymouth.
The first one found was a stilt sandpiper, the third record for Dorset. Not far away was the second bird, a least sandpiper.
***UPDATE***
Just a week later another North American wader has arrived in Weymouth, this time a Baird's sandpiper in Littlesea Cove on The Fleet.
