A very sub-standard video here but it is a behaviour I have never seen before - a Grey Seal courtship display.
I filmed this (partly with my phone) whilst on a birdwatching walk along The Fleet from Chickerell to Wyke. First I just heard some splashing then I saw what I thought was a dolphin or porpoise breaching very noisily. As soon as I got my binoculars on it I could see that it was a seal - acting like a porpoise! I first assumed it must be a Common Seal as there has been one in this area for a year or two now. Then I realised that there was a second larger seal quietly following this one at some distance. This one was larger and with a much longer shaped head, clearly a male Grey Seal. So it looked like I had stumbled upon a pair of Grey Seals indulging in a courtship display, something I had never seen before.
Grey Seals are fairly common around Weymouth, Common Seals much less so. The Grey Seal in the video below spent a lot of time on Weymouth Beach a few years ago.
The only Common Seal I have ever filmed was over on the Suffolk coast at Aldeburgh, where they are a regular sight.
