The National Trust hide on the southern shore of the tidal creek known as Middlebere Lake looks towards the RSPB reserve, often giving excellent views of huge flocks of waders that can reach several thousand birds.
The avocets here can be seen using their upturned bills to sweep through the mud.

Avocets are particularly beautiful in flight, as shown here in a slow-motion video made five years ago at Upton Country Park, at the very northern end of Poole Harbour.
