One of the most attractive of a very attractive selection of ducks that spend every winter with us is the Shoveler. At Radipole they are often hard to get close to but for some reason are much more approachable at Lodmoor.
If anything Wigeon are even more colourful. Plus they make a more attractive noise than Shovelers. All femake ducks make some sort of "quack" but the nakes generally sound far more high pitched when they call. Whereas the male Shoveler makes an odd buzzing noise the male Wigeon emits a haunting, drawn out whistle. Sadly all you can hear on this video is the noise of the wind and the traffic passing Radipole Lake.
My favourite of all the ducks though has got to be the Teal. Here you can see and hear a very noisy flock at Radipole. The bigger ones in the background are Shelduck.
