A male Ruff has been resident at Lodmoor for a couple of months now.
Although male Ruffs are always very variable in their breeding plumage,I've never seen such an unusually coloured bird in winter.
A few years ago I was lucky enough to visit the Ouse Washes near Cambridge, where Ruffs are far more common.
At the time, I didn't really notice that most of these birds were white as well.
The next day I filmed a closer Ruff at Minsmere in Suffolk, a bird pretty much identical to today's Lodmoor bird.
I can only assume that adult male Ruffs are often white, but most of the birds we see on Dorset are brown young birds.
