The flock of Russian dark-bellied brent geese at Ferrybridge often has a few foreigners in it, pale-bellied birds from Spitsbergen.
Yesterday I filmed another brent that come from even farther afield, a black brant from Canada.
The brent geese at Ferrybridge has these three races represented in it every winter, but the vast majority are dark-bellied birds.
Here is a video I made in Portland Harbour a few years ago featuring dark-bellied brents.
The odd noise on the soundtrack is the auto-focus mechanism on the camera I was using at the time.
Several hundred brents are often seen at Ferrybridge but the main flock of thousands of birds is further north on the Fleet. Here they mainly feed on eel grass but also like to raid the winter wheat fields.
