A hundred years ago the huge hoverfly Volucella zonaria was a scarce visitor to the UK but has become far more common since.
They are often quite alarming when they first appear as they are a convincing mimic of the hornet.
But as this video shows they are completely harmless, their mouthparts only adapted for sucking up pollen and, being a type of fly, they don't have a sting.
